The Tarka Trail, inspired by Henry Williamson's much loved novel "Tarka the Otter" takes one through a wonderful variety of Devon scenery (either on foot or on a bicycle) - short walks, circular walks, ideal for day or half-day excursions.

Cycle Hire on the Tarka Trail at Fremington Quay, Barnstaple - 01271 372586, www.biketrail.co.uk The Tarka Trail (cycle or walk) runs from Braunton (River Taw) to Torrington, Weare Giffard and on to Meeth, approx. 32 miles.
Woolacombe Bay is a perfect day out for surfers as there are various surfing schools, who will also hire out equipment; this also applies at Saunton Sands and at Croyde Bay - the latter is for the more experienced surfer. All three beaches are patrolled by the Coastguard. www.surfsouthwest.com

Ilfracombe Golf Club www.ilfracombegolfclub.com and Saunton Sands Golf Club www.sauntongolf.co.uk both welcome visitors. High Bullen Golf Course at Chittlehamholt, www.highbullen.co.uk is a few miles out of South Molton. The Portmore Golf Park, Barnstaple www.portmoregolf.co.uk and Willincott Valley near Woolacombe www.willingcott.co.uk are also close by.
North Devon is blessed with excellent restaurants and pubs. The North Devon Food and Drink website gives a good choice, www.northdevonfood.com. Close to us is The Northgate Inn (at the Aller Cross Roundabout off the Link Road) 01769-579555, our 2 locals, just 3 miles either side of Brayford are The Poltimore Arms, and The White Hart at Bratton Fleming; and a little further on, at Challacombe, The Black Venus. All are child-friendly but The Station Inn at Blackmore Gate has an outdoor play area.
MARKETS AND FARMERS MARKETS
At South Molton, the Farmers Market is held on the fourth Saturday, but the pannier market is excellent always, and this is open on Thursday and Saturday mornings.
In Barnstaple, the general and local produce market is held on Tuesday and Friday mornings, but on other mornings, there is an Antiques Market, Craft Market etc.
